Araneae: Systematics & Taxonomy

More than 45,000 spider species are divided among 114 families. About 700 new spider species are described each year. Spiders are divided into two suborders: Mesothelae (about 100 species) and Opisthothelae. The Mesothelae, currently distributed in Southeast Asia and Japan, retain some features of primitive spiders, including abdominal segmentation and ventral placement of the spinnerets. The Opisthothelae are further divided into two infraorders: Mygalomorphae (about 6% of spider species) and Araneomorphae. Mesothelae and Mygalomorph spiders have chelicerae oriented so that the fangs are parallel; araneomorph spiders usually have opposing fangs. Mesotheles, mygalomorphs, and the most basal group of araneomorph spiders have two pairs of book lungs. In most araneomorph spiders, the posterior set of book lungs are modified into a tracheal system.
