Solifugae: Paleontology

Solifuge fossils are rare, probably due to the thinly sclerotized opisthosoma. The more sclerotized chelicerae may fossilize well but are likely to be found in isolation and may be mistaken for a different organism. The oldest known fossil solifuge is Protosolpuga carbonaria Petrunkevitch, which dates from the Upper Carboniferous (Pennsylvanian) from 313 – 304 Ma.
